”In May 1926, workers across Great Britain stopped working in support of miners who were facing wage reductions and longer working hours. The strike was initiated by the Trade Union Congress, which called on dockworkers, as well as employees in the transport, electricity, gas, heavy chemical industries, construction, and printing sectors to join the work stoppage. Although the strike ended after just nine days, marked by defeat and divisions among participants, it was a week during which more than three million workers stood united and showed solidarity in their demands.

A significant body of archival material for studying the General Strike is housed at the Modern Records Center of the University of Warwick, established in 1973, which serves as the main national archival repository for British trade union and employers’ organization records. The webpage dedicated to the General Strike provides insight into the contents of the main archival collections, with particular emphasis on a set of 450 digitized documents, including newspaper articles, bulletins, radio transcripts, reports, and other sources.

Visual material is presented in the section “The Strike in Pictures” and includes thematically organized photographs, mostly depicting scenes from London, the work of volunteers involved in strikebreaking, and the consequences of unrest in the capital. It also features slides created from images published in newspapers, magazines, and other publications. Visitors to the site are also offered a chronological overview of the unfolding events during the days leading up to, during, and following the strike.”
